How To Find an Interim ED
Your Executive Director is leaving - maybe their choice or maybe the board’s choice. You are likely a bit anxious and feel a real sense of urgency about how things will get done while you hire your next ED. Maybe the organization is in great shape or maybe things are a mess.
Your situation is more common than you know. Luckily, there are people in our community, many former Executive Directors, who serve as “Interims” to support the day-to-day operations of your organization for 2-6 months and allow time for the board to step back, assess its needs in the next leader, and do an appropriate search.Resources
Post an Ad in Not-for-Profit eNews: Contact Bryan Orander at 317-752-7153 or Bryan@CharitableAdvisors.com and tell him you would like to advertise for an Interim Executive Director. An ad can be up on our website within a day or two.
Options with NFP News - Charitable Advisors can receive and acknowledge resumes for you or create a “blind ad” that forwards resumes to your representative without identifying your organization. The blind ad is commonly used when the board has decided it is time for the ED to move on and wants an interim identified before they terminate.
Leadership Ventures: www.leadershipventures.org - A LV staff member will meet with a group of your board leaders (and staff as appropriate) to talk about your current situation and identify the skills and characteristics that will be most important in your interim. Within a week or so, they will identify two or three well-qualified candidates who are immediately available for you to interview.
Departing Founders and Long-term Executives
The departure of a founder or long-term Executive Director is particulary difficult. Call Bryan to learn more about implementing the Prepare/Pivot/Thrive model developed by the Annie Casey Foundation. (317) 752-7153
